Introducing ‘Pinky’ the Panda Pink saved by the Fiat Forum and being used to raise money for charity.
Pinky was spotted for sale on October 8th 2012 by members of the Classic Panda section of The Fiat Forum. The Panda Pink was a limited edition model released by Fiat in the early 90’s. It was based on a 1 litre model with a manual 5 speed gearbox. As well as being very pink the interior had a unique mint green, chequered pink, and lilac colour scheme.
After receiving enough pledges from members of the Forum to cover the initial purchase cost, Pinky was quickly snapped up as others were interested in buying it. The plan is to take Pinky to car shows and other events in order to raise money for ‘Race for life breast cancer research’ and ‘Children in need’. We aim to raise enough money to restore Pinky, then in 2014 he will then be sold by auction at a prominent motoring event. The proceeds from the auction plus any money raised above the restoration cost will go to the two charities.
So far Pinky has attended two shows. On 16th to 18th November Pinky was at the Footman James Classic Motor Show at the NEC (see pic above). From this show we received £86 in donations and a mention in the motoring press. The weekend before the NEC we took Pinky along to Newbury racecourse for their annual classic car show, and here he won best 90’s car. Not a bad start considering we’re not even in to 2013 yet.
Well now we are in to 2013, and Pinky’s first show was ‘Coleford festival of transport’ on Easter Monday. Pinky was polished up for this one and, as usual went down well with the public, especially the children.
After attending a couple of small events Pinky once again showed up at the NEC, this time it was for the Practical Classics Restoration show 2014. Here he was partially disassembled by visiting members of the Fiat Forum. Any further work needed full workshop facilities so Pinky then had a long wait for a space in the workshop where he could be stripped to a bare shell.
During this time Barbara and myself were married, and we asked our wedding guests to make donations to Pinky’s restoration rather than give us presents. A massive thank you to all who contributed.
Pinky is currently up on axle stands with all the underside components removed. Quite a lot of rust has been revealed and I am now in the process of repairing this as time allows.
We have some new window stickers available now which can be bought for a £2.50 donation, please email me if you would like one.
Please look in here regularly for news of future events and news.
One of the events Pinky attended before the strip down was The Brooklands Auto Italia show at the Brooklands museum in Weybridge. Here Pinky was able to show the public his dynamic abilities by having to runs up the famous test hill. We were tipped off by a marshall to just stay in 1st gear so this is what we did.
